Week 15 - Tie-Breaker

People asked "What will happen to the people who lost their match ups" and I've been honest with everyone - I don't know!

Because that decision is left up to The Wheel and I wasn't going to ask it until tonight.

As in right now. I'm spinning it in real time! (as I'm writing this. FYI - when you see me write *spins* or something like that, it's because I am pausing from writing it and ACTUALLY spinning the wheel. Just in case you thought I had done it earlier. Nope. I'm finding out when you find out!)

The options are that all of them are eliminated.
None of them is eliminated
Write Off
Black Mark for all 3

*spins*

Write Off!!!

So  [personal profile] alycewilson  [personal profile] halfshellvenus and [personal profile] roina_arwen are on the hot seat.

You have until Thursday, November 20th at 8pm ET.  It's an Open Topic, so it can be anything - just bring your A-game!

Link your entry to the comments below.

As far as everyone else - maybe someone can figure out where this empty vial came from that I almost tripped on when I came down here.

Please vote for me

in the Idol poll here! Only a few hours left, and I'm falling behind. :(

I just finished a book about an angry roadrunner god, "Snake Eater" by T. J. Kingfisher. The author writes a lot of fantasy, mostly in British settings (which has bled into the language here somewhat), but this is an American Southwest-inspired book. Kind of Ann Tyler meets desert magic, and it was speedy and satisfying. I loved all of its small town characters.

TV-wise, I think we're getting near the end of the UK version of Life on Mars, and I'm not ready. Our son has done some Googling on the series, though, and discovered that the Gene Hunt character (the blowhard, ballistic boss) was enormously popular when the show first aired. He IS hugely fun, though I love the soulful overall theme of the show. In any case, there was a follow-on series that is available on Amazon Prime, so we'll be watching that next. Three more seasons of the Gene Genie! I definitely need that in my life. :D

Poll Help

For Idol this week, we are competing in a head-to-head pool with another author. Only one is guaranteed to move forward, and I could really use your votes. The poll is here, and it closes Tuesday afternoon. Thanks for your support!

We watched Playdate on Amazon Prime last night. It was stupid fun, and Alan Ritchson (from the Reacher TV series) clearly had a lot of fun with it. I'm not sure why Kevin James is in it, but... eh. No harm, no foul.

Someday, we'll get around to watching Ice Road: Vengeance, since Ice Road was surprisingly fun. Lots of twisted, unexpected humor that makes the movie much more enjoyable than it has any right to be!

Pumpkin Pie on the Horizon!

In Idol news, we wrote stories this week that used another contestant's last two entries as inspiration. The poll with my story is here, and I could use all the readers and voters I can get. It's a head-to-head competition where only one winner will emerge from each pair. Ulp!

For those who have been wondering, our son passed the California Bar Exam last week! We were almost positive he would, but knowing for sure is a huge relief for everyone. We celebrated by going to a local Czech/Italian (yes, really) restaurant and eating their incredible chicken paprikash and lava cake. \o/

TV-wise, I finished watching Scott And Bailey on BritBox (really enjoyed the whole series). And sadly, I also finished S2 of Netflix's Wednesday. I could look at the sets and costumes for that show for years and never be tired of it. I need more! Now I'm trying out Orphan Black for my garage-biking needs. Let's hope it's fast-paced enough.

And finally, I promised [personal profile] kizzy that I would share my pumpkin pie recipe. This is basically Libby's recipe, but with much better spicing.

~*~

Better Pumpkin Pie

1 can (15 oz.) Libby’s 100% Pure Pumpkin
1½ cups (1 can or 12 fl. oz.) Evaporated Milk (regular, not sweetened)
3/4 cup granulated sugar (150 g.)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
2 large eggs
1 unbaked 9-inch (4 cup volume) deep-dish pie shell

1. Preheat oven to 425º.
2. Mix dry ingredients in a small bowl. Beat eggs in a large bowl. In the large bowl, stir in pumpkin and the dry ingredient mixture. Gradually stir in evaporated milk.
3. Pour into pie shell.
4. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350º. Bake for 40-60 minutes or until knife inserted near center comes out clean. Note: bake until the internal temperature hits 175 degrees (use an instant-read thermometer). Be sure that the center of the pumpkin pie jiggles slightly; it will set up as it cools.
5. Cool on wire rack for 2 hours.

Vote - Week 15

A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

Two writers go head to head. Only one in each eligible match will automatically move forward. (the two byes will of course move forward as well) The others will face the Wheel to determine their fate. The Wheel COULD eliminate all of them. It could eliminate half. One. It could force them into a second round of write offs, honestly, it could really do just about any option you can think of.

The ONLY way to keep your favorites out of the mercy of the Wheel is to Read, Comment and VOTE for your favorites to make it to the next round!

The polls will close Tuesday, Nov 18th at 8pm ET. Good luck to everyone!

The Accusation - Week 15

I should have posted this earlier, but (1) I was recovering from wiping some jalapeno seed residue directly into my eye and (2) I also had to transfer the ridiculously small amount into an account I could use to buy DW paid membership because I hadn't noticed that expired and I can't post polls without it!!  So, mostly the former. Pay no attention to the latter!  :)

Or maybe the reverse of that. Whichever is more embarrassing, notice that!  ;)

***

Before we get to the poll though, we are gathered here with our ever shrinking numbers to take more shot at getting it right.

Two shots to stop the Killer(s): outing them and saving a life.

Let's start with the one that had the most lopsided results - once again, it wasn't even close. You've collectively come together and had pinpointed the identity of the Killer!!!  Per the group, it's [personal profile] hafnia !!

Lightning crashes outside. Screams of anguish.  A thick black smoke fills the room... none of these things happen. It's just, nothing all that interesting other than her staring at you like "What were you thinking?"

The who should be given the antidote portion though was a little more complicated.  It ended up being a tie between [personal profile] inkstainedfingertips  and [personal profile] halfshellvenus .  As such, I let the Wheel decide. The antidote this week goes to[personal profile] halfshellvenus !

Drink up!!

It doesn't do anything for you. But it's pretty tasty. So enjoy!

LJ Idol Wheel of Chaos: "Becoming Multitudes"

Becoming Multitudes
Idol Wheel of Chaos | Week 15 | 2091 words
Head to Head: Use another author's two entries from last week as a springboard. Mine were [personal profile] drippedonpaper's Ambuscade and A Nail Driven Out By Another Nail.

x-x-x-x-x

I was five years old the first time I changed.

One minute, I was looking at a bluebird and wondering what it would be like to fly. Suddenly, the grass was up to my chest and the rest of the world seemed far away.

I was so startled that I changed right back again.

I wasn't sure it had actually happened. How was it even possible? I decided that I must have imagined it. I kept on believing that until six months later, when it happened all over again.

It was such an innocent thought: do puppies know their tails are wagging? And then I was nose to nose with our puppy, a happy little brown dachshund who'd never met another dog she didn't like. We chased each other around the yard for a long time, running circles in the grass and racing in and out of the flowerbeds. When I stopped to catch my breath, I remembered who I was and just like that, I was Annie again. Coco jumped back and yipped, but was just as happy to see the Annie version of me as puppy me.

After that, I started to wonder if changing was something everyone could do.

"Mommy, do you ever change into other things?" I asked her.

"Like what?" she said.

"Like a bird, or a doggy?"

She just laughed and hugged me. "What an imagination you have!"

I guessed that meant No.

I asked my friend Sophie whether she had ever been something else. "A cat once, maybe?" she said. "In a dream?"

As I got older, I learned to stop asking. Nobody else could do what I did. That either made me special or weird. Maybe both.

Mid-November already!

October flew by. There was my birthday, and that was it. We missed Halloween (4th year running) because we had an out-of-town wedding to go to, and flew out on that Friday. The wedding was fantastic, but it was strange to miss out on little kids in costumes. We saw a few dressed-up adults during our travels, but no little kids!

There was lots of visiting with family, and in between events I wrote one of my two Idol entries in the hotel on my tiny laptop. Not the best environment, and it resulted in a very choppy first draft that needed heavy revision on the day the stories were due! To top that off, there was no poll, so hardly anybody read them. :( If you're interested, they were Story 1 and Story 2, both seasonal. :D

And possibly even weirder than missing Halloween was switching back to Standard Time on that Sunday. You don't really feel that extra hour when you're traveling (except for the confusion it causes). At home, though, I like to really enjoy having another hour to get stuff done! That feeling gets negated a bit when darkness comes crashing down even earlier, but it's nice while it lasts.

I really notice the aftermath of the time shift when I'm bicycling. I find it hard to get out as soon as I'd like, so now I'm stuck biking into the sun at the end of the ride. It's blinding. Thank goodness I've been saved by late-day clouds this week. But overall, the problem will only get worse.

Thanksgiving is coming up, and we're wondering if our daughter will be able to make it home? That wasn't in doubt until Trump's screw-ups with air-traffic controllers, but it's a new snafu every day with that man. She did make it home for my birthday for about 1 1/2 days, which was great! We never see as much of her as we'd like.

Got any big plans for the holidays? It'll just be the (I hope) four of us, as usual. Though we now have a Weber grill again after 4 years, so we should be able to have barbecued turkey on the big day!

The Wheelhouse - Week 15- 2

Writers have until Thursday to get their entries in!  therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1209672.html

But that also means they have until then to get in their accusations on who the Killer(s) is/are!  I just had to go back and reread the post where I announced the Killers, because there was a detail I was remembering but It sounded like something I DIDN'T end up implementing.  After checking, I was right. It's not a "real" thing... but it might have been fun.

The idea was that the Killers would keep up their roles until the Top 5.  Which is still the case.  The "extra that got dropped" is that any Killers who made it undetected to the Top 5 automatically won the game!  :D  Which would have put a LOT more pressure on the rest of you to find them!! As is, it's just that once you get to the Top 5, or you expose all of them, they stop being Killers and resume their normal roles in the game, bleeding back in, and retired from their murderous ways!!

The Wheelhouse - Week 15

I've been asked this question a couple times, which makes me think I wasn't spelling it out clearly enough:

- The contestants are writing ONE entry. But they are using the two entries as their creative springboard!

***

Also, during Week 14 there was an empty vial found in the hallway.  For those keeping score.

Prompt - Week 15

We have a twist - finding your opponent. People have been impatiently waiting for the prompt to be posted, expecting me to spin the Wheel. But that's not the case this time. This time the prompt was built into the structure of the twist. I just needed to verify with the Wheel that my interpretation of how this would work is how it actually does.... for the record, I was correct!

***

So, what is your prompt? Take a look at your opponent's TWO entries from last week: therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1208099.html

You are going to be using those are springboards for YOUR entry this week. It's basically just another version of "reinterpret an entry from a competitor" deal, but with two entries that you need to shape into something of your own!!

This will either be a lot of fun or a complete trainwreck! I'm here for it either way!!!

The deadline to link your entry to this thread is Thursday, November 13th at 7pm ET

Have fun!!
